The other day, as I was driving home, I saw a sign on an overpass - "God
is With U.S.". Now, I understand the sentiment, but let's not forget -
those who attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, are pretty sure
that God is really on their side.
So what do we do now? We've been attacked by terrorists, something that we had so
far been able to avoid, unlike the rest of the world. And worse, we're being
bitten by the dog we once fed. That seems to happen a lot to us. Perhaps, in
the future, we ought to be more careful about the strays that we decide to
take on.
Although I am not against the war being waged even as I write this, I believe
that there are other actions that also need to be taken. There are millions of
people in Afghanistan who are incredibly poor, underfed, with no hopes of
education or a better life for their children Feeding and clothing these people
might be a greater help in the long run than tracking down Osama bin Laden.
After all, he is as much a symptom as a cause.
This issue of the SCROOMtimes contains the thoughts of our columnists on the
events of September 11th and their aftermath. Skippy wishes for peace, but
knows that the wish must be tempered with reality. Dean Shutt, in Fun & Games,
discusses the halting of sports activities in the wake of the bombing, while
Dave Lind (Cheap Seats) and Matt Sedik (Meltdown) offer more personal thoughts.
And Matt pops up again, discussing both the telethon "America: A Tribute
to Heroes" and Hollywood's other reaction, in Matt on Film.
And, while last month's tragedy weigh's heavily upon us here at the 'times, we
also realize that continuing on is the right thing to do, our own little way of
fighting back. To that end, in Gotta See This, our main movie reviewer Ealasaid
Haas reviews the new movie "The Others", and the Backpage, as usual
contains the best humor that we could discover, or hunt down.
Please check us out, tell your friends, and call up the Red Cross or your local
blood bank. The need for blood didn't stop in the few days after the attack.
